Touched By Kindness

My friend John was visiting from Chicago this weekend. We were eating at a restaurant near our farm when John noticed that the waitress‘s nametag had "Sunshine," on it. John asked the woman if her name was really Sunshine. She said yes and proceeded to tell John her father named her Sunshine after the John Denver song about sunshine which was popular when she was born. We noticed Sunshine began to cry as she walked away. John asked her why she was so upset. Sunshine said her father was in a nursing home with Alzheimer‘s and she visited him everyday but it was so painful to watch him slip away. John told Sunshine that he had known John Denver for many years before his death and they were friends. John asked Sunshine to give him the location of her daddy‘s nursing home and we were going to make a visit to take him some John Denver songs. She lost it and tearfully wrote down the nursing homes information. The next morning John had me up early with both of us driving to the nursing home to visit Sunshine‘s father with Alzheimers. All I want to say is that it was magic. Watching a person who has his memory taken but lights up like a light bulb when he hears John Denver is a precious gift. Tom, Sunshine‘s dad, began to cry as he slowly sang along with John Denver on the Youtube video. We were all singing, crying and celebrating life. Thanks to my dear friend John, I remembered how radically miraculous life can be when we choose to stop our life to do something kind for someone else in a busy world that pushes each of us to our limits. I am touched by your kindness John and love you dear friend.
